♺ Base Permissions

❱ HUGGING THIS CHARACTER: He might stop you, but it's OOCly fine to try. (Even then, he may not appreciate being touched, but if it's actually painful, it can rev him up, calm him down, or help him focus.) ❱ KISSING THIS CHARACTER: He's even MORE likely to stop you, but it's still OOCly fine to try. ❱ FLIRTING WITH THIS CHARACTER: Perfectly fine, but I am so sorry in advance for whatever he says in response. ❱ FIGHTING WITH THIS CHARACTER: By all means. He deserves it. But also Dirk fights back. ❱ INJURING THIS CHARACTER: Injuries are absolutely allowed and may even be deserved. I don't actually have any limits on the type or severity, but you should probably let ME know if you have any because I started out as a horror writer and sometimes it kinda shows. ❱ KILLING THIS CHARACTER: Yeah, he's hot for that. ❱ PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: Mind reading and mind control are pretty doable, but they're going to suck for the psychic individual on account of his identity fragmentation, paranoia, and control issues. Also may be the only way to understand anything that comes out of his mouth. Your mileage may vary. Also, he'll... probably know you're doing it? It's a little weird.

♺ The Narrative

❱ "The Narrative" specifically is the awareness of the text, panels, medium, and media in general. Basically, it's awareness of the metafictional structures that contribute to and manifest his literal existence. Not only can he 'read' the material of canon, it's actually beamed more or less directly into his brain, nonstop. He can also write or otherwise manipulate the narrative, though. Functionally, in an RP sense, Dirk can 'hear' what's written in the text of all tags, and in my tags, he can TRY to stipulate events or dictate thoughts that other characters will then experience. In extremes, he may even put words in another character's mouth, literally. So it's like mind reading/mind control, but think of it also as him mind-reading the setting. This is pretty heavily nerfed, thankfully, by two conditions. One, his control over other characters is stronger when those characters would want to listen to Dirk Strider OR would normally take outside impulses as their own. Two, his control over other characters is stronger when he tells them to do or think or feel things they actually want to do already. And his control over other people falls apart pretty quickly if he can't convincingly emulate either or both of these conditions. Dirk, a bottomless, limitless, endless ocean of infinitely himself, is absolutely fucking garbage at reading people, even when they straight up tell him who they are and what they're feeling. Particularly perceptive characters (especially those who have experience with mind control) may notice something weird is happening! (John Egbert does this in canon, though not because he's perceptive. It's because Dirk just can't fucking stop being egregiously himself and doesn't care about John's immersion at all.) Particularly individualistic or stubborn characters may resist or argue with him! (Dave Strider does this in canon.) Characters whose insecurities, vulnerabilities, or motives are easily replicated by Dirk projecting blatantly all over them are more at risk (this happens to Kanaya) but even that's not ironclad. Characters who have certain "self"/soul protections, like Emet-selch and Roxy Lalonde, are immune. They're just a blank when he tries to "read" them and so everything they do comes completely from nowhere to him. Deeply unsettling. This is pretty rare, though... so let me know if you think this might apply to your character and we'll figure it out! On top of all that, it's worth noting that Dirk often can't multitask for shit. The meta is an extension of his consciousness, but his body still needs controlling. As a result, sometimes he walks into things because he's too focused on his narrative. Or he answers textual stuff out loud with his mouth, or forgets to use his mouth to respond to actual spoken dialogue. This isn't to say he CAN'T be "himself" and the Narrator and experience the Narrative or manipulate it all at the same time, but it's hard and he's got so many selves and he's so intense about it that his mastery of it all is inconsistent at best. He does NOT know about DWRP, he will NEVER know about that. ONLY the presence of a narrative, the fourth wall, canon, and an audience (to whom he addresses his narration.) This is true regardless of what's opted in or out of, so if this is not your thing, I can avoid tagging you and your characters! I don't mind! I'd much rather everyone have a good time here.

♺ Other Content Warnings

If you need me to avoid a topic in tagging you, please let me know and I'll accommodate! The following are the most likely issues, but whatever you want to tell me can help! ❱ SUICIDE: Big Fat Suicide Warning on Dirk Strider. His own death is a recurring theme in canon, and he often digresses into suicidal ideation, which ranges from "extremely stale memes about decapitation" to "explicit descriptions of the act and/or the emotions." This includes graphic descriptions of physical injury and extensive detailing of self loathing. And his obsession with his own demise is as much a sexual fascination as it is an ideological one. ❱ DISSOCIATIVE FLAVOUR: Dissociation, depersonalisation, and derealisation, as well as reality issues in general. These are difficult to avoid, to be quite honest. His entire brain is a reality issue, his personhood is questionable and in constant flux, and like... he has a doll/machine/puppet fixation for SO many reasons. Fetishistic and otherwise. Seriously, his metareality is his actual reality and his in-person experiences are often less "real" than his meta, experienced via a puppeted form of "self." ❱ BIGOTRY: He's pretty gross about sexualities across the board, the "gay and homophobic" thing is real. ❱ ABUSE (ROMANTIC, SUBSTANCES, ETC.): Dirk has also perpetrated emotional/psychological abuse of a former romantic partner (amongst others), as well as engaging in mind control of... several people. Said romantic partner is known for repeated instances of sexual infidelity, severe alcoholism and substance abuse, and... uh, various forms of dishonesty that affected his relationship with Dirk. He has a lot of issues regarding these subjects. He HATES people drinking alcohol or doing a weed. ❱ CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT: Child abuse and child neglect are themes that come up for... uh, more than one version of Dirk, with Dirk starring both as perpetrator and as sufferer. Bro Strider (a Dirk splinter) was an abuser, Dirk himself grew up massively neglected and it colours everything he does, it's pretty much the background radiation of his whole character. When it comes to these topics, he oscillates between gross self-condemnation, blatant denial, and specific justification and self-righteousness. As a result of his own convoluted personhood, a lot of this has gotten tangled up in his sexuality. Honestly, his sexual interests can be split into two categories: intimacy and power. ❱ DEAD DOVE: It will help me MASSIVELY to know if you are cool with dubcon and/or noncon. Dirk is repressed as HELL, and with his powers AND his fetishes being what they are, the first is really important, and the second is... like, I assume it's a "no" unless you specify otherwise, but it's still helpful to have people actually specify yes or no.
